The History of CMOA
The Computer Museum of America was founded in January 1998, making it one of the oldest museums of its kind in the United States. CMOA was founded by Michael Enright and Chris Wiese, who were both passionate about preserving and sharing the history of computing. After meeting each other in a computer class at Auburn University, Enright and Wiese decided to create the museum together. CMOA opened its doors to the public in May of that year. The museum was originally located in a small storefront on Watts Street until it outgrew that space. After looking for a new location for over a year, the museum finally found a space on Ga. 7 and leased a 50,000-square-foot building. The museum officially moved into the new building in July 1999. Located in the city of Roswell, near the Dimmick/Roswell Library, CMOA’s location made it ideally suited for such a museum.
